I originally identified this plant as Alisma gramineum, a species not known from southern California; however, Alismataceae authority Robert R. Haynes has identified it as Sagittaria platyphylla, an eastern U.S. species .


Lemnaceae (Araceae): Lemna turionifera (Turion Duckweed)

Dominant duckweed (Lemna turionifera) in Lake Fulmor along Hwy 243 (Riverside Co., California). The midline row of minute papules on dorsal surface also rules out the perplexing nongibbous L. gibba.


Order Hymenoptera, Family Formicidae: Liometopum occidentale (Velvety Tree Ant)

These aggressive, biting ants give off a pungent odor if disturbed.
